December’s new PlayStation Plus Classics brings more Sly Cooper games, along with Jak & Daxte

Sony is adding Sly 2, Sly 3, and Jak & Daxter to PlayStation Classics on December 10, with emulation and trophy support expected.

Sony is kicking off December with a hefty dose of nostalgia for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. On December 10, they're adding not one, but three classic titles to the PlayStation Classics lineup. And for those of us who’ve been patiently waiting for more Sly Cooper and Jak & Daxter action, the wait is finally over!

First up, we’ve got Sly 2: Band of Thieves and Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. Yes, that’s right—everyone’s favorite thieving raccoon and his trusty gang of misfits are back in action. If you’ve already played the original Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, which made its comeback earlier this year, you’re probably itching to continue the adventure. Well, you’re in luck! These two sequels are dropping into the lineup just in time for the holidays. For all the trophy hunters out there (myself included), there’s hope that these will also feature full trophy support, just like the first game did. Because, let’s be honest, that platinum trophy wasn’t earned in vain. We want to complete the collection!

While Sony’s being a bit vague on the specifics (as they often are), it's safe to assume that Sly 2 and Sly 3 will also be available to purchase separately for those who don’t have a Premium membership, just like other PlayStation first-party Classics have been in the past. However, as we learned from past Classic titles, Sony’s communication about emulation versus streaming can be a bit frustrating. Resistance, for example, was added to the Classics lineup recently, and I was excited to play it without dealing with PlayStation’s streaming service. But nope—turns out, it’s just the streaming version. So, fingers crossed Sly 2 and Sly 3 will be properly emulated with all the bells and whistles, and I can finally get that elusive Platinum for both games.

Now, in a slightly unexpected twist, Sony is also adding Jak & Daxter: The Precursor’s Legacy to the Classics lineup. Now, you might be thinking, “Wait, wasn’t that already available on PlayStation?” And you’d be right! The original Jak & Daxter is available for purchase, and if you’ve got a PlayStation Plus Premium membership, you can already access several other Jak & Daxter games too. So why are we getting The Precursor’s Legacy again? Well, the details are a little murky, but here’s what we’re guessing: the existing Jak & Daxter titles on PS4 are ports of the original game, while this new version is likely being emulated. That means it will probably run much closer to the original PS2 version of the game, with fewer issues and a better experience overall. But again, since Sony’s not giving us a full breakdown, we’re left to speculate.

It’s a bit odd to see two versions of the same game, but I’m not complaining—Jak & Daxter is a classic, and getting to play the original with emulation support is a welcome upgrade. The real question is whether this new version will fix some of the streaming or performance issues we’ve seen with PlayStation Plus Classics in the past. We’ll have to wait and see.

So, if you’ve got a Premium subscription, mark your calendars for December 10. Sly 2, Sly 3, and Jak & Daxter: The Precursor’s Legacy will be available as part of your membership. Whether you're a longtime fan of these iconic series or just want to dive into some classic platforming action, it’s shaping up to be a fun, retro-filled month. Just don’t expect Sony to clear up any confusion about the details—if you’re a PlayStation Classic veteran, you know the drill by now!
