New Year Gaming Goal: 12 Platinum Trophies

Like the setting sun, 2024 has taken its bow and dipped out of view. And, much like that brutally bright, early morning sun that hits you in the face when you’re trying to sleep, 2025 has come crashing in—way too early, way too bright, and way too peppy for its own good. The silver lining? Despite having to squint, complain about how bright it is, and beg for just five more minutes of sleep, 2025 is shaping up to be a pretty exciting year for video games. Well, aside from all the chaos and industry drama, but here’s hoping that settles down eventually... maybe.

Looking back, 2024 was a pretty wild ride for the gaming industry. Job losses? Yep, still a thing. But it was also the year Xbox games showed up on PlayStation, a PlayStation-published game made its way to the Switch, and the whole world couldn’t stop talking about handheld consoles like they were the second coming. And yet, here we are... blinking our way into 2025.

Now, let’s get to the fun part. I was sitting around, minding my own business, when a random thought hit me like a ton of bricks: New Year’s resolution. Normally, I couldn’t care less about these things, but I got this wild idea for myself: Platinum trophies. For the past six months, I've had this strange, uncontrollable urge to earn some shiny trophies, and writing that guide to the most popular Platinum trophies only made it worse. Looking at my own collection, though? It's pathetic. I've only got 7—seven! A few were probably accidental at best. So, I hatched a master plan: 12 Platinum trophies by 2026. That’s nearly tripling my meager stash!

But here’s the thing—what games do I actually want to Platinum? There are so many out there! So many! But... I’ve got some ground rules. I want to keep it to games that won’t take more than 30 hours. That way, I can squeeze in a little trophy-hunting each day without sacrificing time for whatever game I’m reviewing. Plus, I’m not looking for a grind fest. I’m not about to spend 100 hours collecting every little doodad in the world just for the sake of a trophy. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Oh, and just to be clear, I might end up Platinum-ing whatever game I’m reviewing at the time too. Not limiting myself to 12—if more fall into place, I’ll be all over it like a cat on a sunbeam.

One thing I will avoid, however, is the cheap Trophy tat. You know the stuff I’m talking about—the games that hand you a Platinum just for hitting “Start” or playing for five minutes. I’m not here for that nonsense. Nope, I’m aiming for the real deal.

Also, I’m feeling adventurous. I think I’ll focus on games I haven’t played yet, instead of finishing ones I’m almost done with. Sure, it’s tempting to go back to those near-Platinum titles that are collecting dust, but honestly? I’d rather dive into something fresh or revisit a game I haven’t touched in ages or maybe played on another platform entirely. New experiences, here I come!

So here’s the list I’m considering, for now:

  • Sly 2 and Sly 3 (Because who doesn’t love a raccoon thief?)
  • Ratchet & Clank (2016) (Classic, with a shiny new coat of paint)
  • Toy Story 2 (I’m not crying, you’re crying)
  • Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 (Vampires, baby!)
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster (Because why not?)
  • Evil West (I mean, have you seen the trailer?)
  • Mass Effect Legendary Edition (Commander Shepard, let’s do this)
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor (Time to wreck some orcs)
  • Mafia: Definitive Edition (Say hello to my little friend, the Platinum)
  • Doki-Doki Literature Club (Things will get... interesting)
  • Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Who you gonna call?)
  • Tunic (Charming and difficult—my kind of game)
  • Maneater (You’re a shark. Eat stuff. What more do you need?)
  • Immortals of Aveum (Casting magic like a pro)
  • Pacific Drive (The open road beckons)
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered (Just swinging through the city)
  • Uncharted series (Adventuring, treasure, and more treasure)
  • Concrete Genie (Painting a world of wonder)
  • Alan Wake 2 (Stephen King meets video game magic)
  • Destroy All Humans and Destroy All Humans 2 (Aliens, lasers, chaos)
  • Ape Escape (Time to catch monkeys!)
  • God of War 3 Remastered (Kratos is still angry)

This is a big list, but there are so many more games I want to try! There’s just no end to the avalanche of new releases. I mean, do I even have time to breathe? Maybe, maybe not.

But hey, if you have suggestions for shorter, fun Platinums, drop them in the comments. I’d love to know what you’ve chased and conquered.

Lastly, do you want me to keep you updated on this quest, or should I just post about it on social media and save the big reveal for next year? Either way, I’ll be busy grinding trophies and possibly 3D printing each one as I go. A physical collection, anyone? Let me know what you think.

Oh, and by the way, I’m on Bluesky now! Come find me if you want to see me complain about 2025 a little more.
